Bridging the gap between CSOs and Women Parliamentarians (November 2011)
During the meeting the women identified the challenges that hinders women empowerment and advancement in south Sudan and their lack of participation in decision-making. These issues were categorized into cultural, political and socio-economic factors; which were further explained in details in accordance with their context. The two days meeting also brought in the issue of gender justice, democracy and women participation in peace negotiations at different levels.
With the challenges stated; the women aligned some possible actions in the light of the four pillars of the UNSCR1325 of prevention, participation, protection, relief and recovery. Concrete and practical activities were identified to address the challenges, though some activities requires a long term planning for at least 2 to 5 years while others need short term commitments. See full reports here
Under the pillar of protection; women agreed to raise women security issues to the ministry of interior and advocate for creation of functional protection units among many other proposed actions.
Under the Prevention pillar; a need for more awareness on UNSCR 1325, CEDAW, the Maputo protocol and Human Rights framework were raised. However an issue of language was discussed and a need of simplified versions and media friendly context is required for effective communication to all.
The Participation pillar; suggest advocacy and sensitization to educated women to join political parties and formation of a stronger network of CSOs and women in power to support each other and address women challenges jointly.
The Relief and recovery pillar; suggested trainings of women on Business management and advocacy for Funds to boost women business, and much more.
Eve Organization in partnership with Operation 1325 –Sweden organized a two-days meeting from 4 -5 November 2011 to bridge the gap between Organizations and the Women Parliamentarians in Central Equatorial State. The meeting brought together representatives from Women Organizations, women groups around South Sudan, the CES state women parliamentarians, and representatives from the ministry of gender at both national and state level, with a goal of discussing challenges facing women in South Sudan in the context of
UNSCR 1325 and finding ways of resolving them jointly. The meeting also aimed at finding ways through which the different stakeholders could advocate together for a National Action plan of UNSCR 1325 and its implementation in South Sudan.
